DESIGN AESTHETICS II

Creature Mark

I was tasked with replicating the visual identity of a chosen animal. For this project, I chose to illustrate a praying mantis. The praying mantis has many unique attributes not present in other insects. I wanted to represent the grace, beauty, and elegance of this animal and portray its dazzling rarity.

SKETCHES

I started off my project by sketching the mantis. I wanted to better understand the anatomy of this creature to be able to replicate its unique figure throughout my design.

DIGITAL ITERATIONS

CREATURE MARK WITH POEM

Throughout my design process, I continued to iterate to perfect my creature mark. I first wanted to convey the shape of the creature, then isolate its features to convey its full form. Understanding the creature and what it symbolizes in culture allowed me to further iterate to create a design that would connect with its audience.

Along with creating the creature mark, I was tasked with creating a visual with a given poem. This part of the project allowed me to express more of my own creative freedom. As well as exemplifying the poem, I also was able to describe the praying mantis as a creature and picture its environment.

Designing a creature mark sets a business apart, creates a unique branding element, and captures attention. It offers versatility across various mediums and adds character to a brand. A well-designed creature mark communicates a business's essence to its audience, fostering recognition and success.

“Like a statue stands the mantis, solid and silent as she stalks her prey.”

CREATURE POEM ITERATIONS

I wanted to showcase the natural camouflage and stealth of praying mantises, emphasizing their "raptorial legs" and predator skills. In my poem, I portray the mantis stalking prey, staring at the audience as if they were victims. This insect strikes a prayer-like pose, highlighting its body structure for survival. I aimed to create visuals that deepen the reader's connection and inspire admiration for this captivating creature.

FINAL CREATURE MARK

I was very pleased with the final outcome of both of these projects. Through this experience, I grew an appreciation for unnoticed detail throughout nature. This project helped my design process and ultimately kept me organized.
